 the Lab - Feature
the Lab's FeaturesRichard Smith

Richard Smith was a little surprised when he found himself qualified as a marine biologist and poking his nose into the private lives of obscure creatures on coral reefs and the silty bottom of harbours.

Nor did the man dubbed 'Dr Worm', by loved ones (and just plain 'worm', by others) ever really expect to end up making television programmes. Prior to joining the ABC sometime in the last millennium, it seemed far too unlikely that anyone would indulge him with the opportunity to live out childhood fantasies like flying to Mars, walking with dinosaurs, swimming with sharks and tunnelling inside ancient pyramids.

Since turning film-maker, Smith has worked on most of the ABC's television science output; from magazine programmes like Quantum, Catalyst and A Question of Survival, to longer documentary programmes and international productions.

Over the years, Richard has explored the inside of black holes and contemplated the Singularity. He has stood on the top of volcanoes and witnessed the shadow of the moon racing across the cloud tops below. He has explored remote corners of the darkest Amazon and glimpsed the depths of the ocean in submarines. He has watched on as spacecraft have landed on distant worlds and crashed to the Earth in ruins.

Got a good idea?

The Lab is always looking to commission new features for publication on our site. So if you have one, let us know. Features can be on any topic, provided they are broadly related to science... new research, a different angle on an old problem, a discussion feature, or a new style of story defined by you. We value features that are easy to digest but intelligent and thought-provoking.

If you're a budding journalist and have an idea you think would make a good feature, write to us at thelab@your.abc.net.au with a few paragraphs outlining your story, ideas for accompanying illustrations or presentation techniques, and a little bit about yourself. If we like it, you write it and we'll publish it. Details of our contract and copyright arrangements are available by request.
